Returning player question

I've returned after not having played for 7 years or so. I spoke to a GM about this and while I believe him the answer seems insane. What happen was I was on Trammel near the Orc Cave marked on the map north of Britain. I ran into a Hurt's Zombie Skeleton(or something like that). Killed my character in about 3 hits. I checked here and it says(http://www.uoguide.com/Zombie_Skeleton) that it has Str 500, Dex 500, Int 500, and 2500 HP. GM said that these things randomly spawn when players die? So I have to ask WT? I know my 7 year old character isn't up to snuff, but is it seriously normal to expect that now? There is no way I could take something like that down and couldn't run fast enough to get away as it just cased me down about as fast as a horse. Is my character just that weak I should be able to take something like that? Am I missing something I should be doing or should know?
